Sister Collective
Sister Collective (Siobhain Ma & Cass Ezeji) is a creative collective that explores the experiences and challenges facing mixed-race Scottish women. Ezeji and Ma are childhood friends and share respective backgrounds in music and sound art. ‘Sister' sees the pair turn their attention to their experiences growing up mixed-race in Glasgow. Their work focuses on microaggressions encountered by biracial women along with questions of identity and establishing a connection with their respective fatherlands (Nigeria, Hong Kong, Ireland and Scotland) from a distance.
Commissioned by Radiophrenia, 'Hotline' was a live-to-broadcast performance at the Centre of Contemporary Art combining soundbites, poetry and pre-recorded interviews with young mixed-race women in Glasgow to explore the ‘mixed experience’ in Scotland. It was created to work in a live environment with a present audience and also for an audience of listeners at home.
‘Hotline’ has also been performed at Glasgow Women's Library as part of Herland curated by Collect:if.
In 2017 Sister facilitated workshops for Radiophrenia on experimental radio and sound-making with the 16+ program at Glasgow Clyde College, a unique programme supporting unaccompanied young asylum seekers and refugees from a range of backgrounds and countries. The 2017-2018 class, with an age range of 16-19, came together with Sister to produce their own radio work for Radiophrenia, inspired by and featuring sounds of their home countries and what they hear in their new home of Glasgow. Along with Radiophrenia the group also worked with Media Co-op to document the project. The final piece WE ARE THE SAME, WE ARE THE WORLD was broadcast on Radiophrenia on November 9th 2017.
